SCENA CONTEMPORANEA MARCO CHENEVIER Purgatorio, ovvero aspettando il Paradiso è una lotta con sé stessi. Al poeta, e a noi che seguiamo con la danza il suo cammino, prima di giungere alla grazia infinita del beato, tocca scalare una montagna alta tanto quanto veduta non avea alcuna e dove 'ndarno vi sarien le gambe pronte. Il timore di Dante è il nostro timore; ma il poeta ci conforta: questa montagna è tale, che sempre al cominciar di sotto è grave; e quant'om più va su e men fa male. Si scala così la montagna che conduce al Paradiso, con lo sguardo sempre meno rivolto a terra, ma lassù, verso altezze vertiginose che tolgono il respiro. Come in una discesa libera a folle velocità dove il cadere somiglia così tanto al volo. Before reaching the infinite grace of the blessed, it is up to the poet, and to us who follow his path with dance, to climb a mountain, dim from distance, and it seemed to me so high as I had never any one beheld / that nimble legs would there have been in vain. Dante's fear is our fear; but the poet comforts us: this mount is such, that ever at the beginning down below 'tis tiresome, and aye the more one climbs, the less it hurts. We thus climb the mountain that leads to Paradise, with our gaze ever less focused on the ground, but up there, towards dizzying heights that take your breath away.
